Graeme Souness has expressed his surprise at Jack Butland not being given a chance at Manchester United amid his current form for Glasgow Rangers.
The 30-year-old moved to Ibrox in the summer after making zero appearances during his short loan spell at Old Trafford.
Jack Butland was initially on the books of Crystal Palace when he moved to Manchester United, but his game time was limited at both clubs.
But now, Graeme Souness says it’s a ‘mystery’ how Rangers managed to sign the shot-stopper because he thinks he is the ‘complete goalkeeper’, as he told talkSPORT.
Despite the Gers sacking Michael Beale this season, losing both Glasgow derbies and sitting second in the Scottish Premiership table where a number of their summer signings have come under fire, you can’t fire any shots at the man in between their sticks.
Not only has Jack Butland been Rangers’ best player this season, but one of the signings of the Scottish transfer window.
And the more Graeme Souness watches him in action, the more he questions why he wasn’t handed a chance at a place like Manchester United given their goalkeeping struggles.
Jack Butland from Manchester United to Rangers
“They have got Jack Butland, it’s a mystery to me,” said Souness. “I have been up there and watched him several times. I watched the Old Firm game.
“He looks like the complete goalkeeper. Great presence. I think he is 6 foot 5. The modern one has to be able to deal with the ball at his feet. He has got that. Lovely kicker of the ball. He just looks like an all-round and really, really good goalkeeper.
“Then I googled him. He was at Manchester United. He started off as the youngest-ever goalkeeper to play for England. I think he has nine caps. But then just seems to have disappeared off the scene. Going out on loan to different clubs.
“I am looking at him, at 30, which now as a goalkeeper you are entering your best years, how have Rangers got him? He is what I have seen this year a really, really top goalkeeper.
“Then you have the Manchester United story where they have de Gea. You have got (Dean) Henderson and Jack Butland. He never played a game for Man United, so they got rid of those three goalkeepers. Jack leaves on a free, which is Glasgow Rangers’ gain and they go and spend £70 odd million on Onana.”

Andre Onana’s form for Manchester United
The powers that be at Old Trafford made some big calls in the summer, including letting go of David de Gea and replacing him with Champions League finalist, Andre Onana.
At Inter, he was a top player and one of their best performers, with his best quality being how aggressive he is off his line and the ability at his feet.
But it’s fair to say that Man United fans have seen too much of the wrong side of Onana, including how he cost them in the Champions League.
All of that just intensifies the pressure on that position and continues to raise questions as to why certain players were let go.
