Graeme Murty wants Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier to curb his attacking instincts

Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have just handed James Tavernier a new contract.

Graeme Murty has told the Scottish Herald that he feels Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier is too attacking at times.

Tavernier has just signed a new contract at Rangers, and is very highly regarded at Ibrox.

There is no doubting that the right-back has been one of Rangers’ top performers this season, and he has contributed a great deal in an attacking sense.

Tavernier has scored six goals and claimed eight assists across all competitions.

But Murty, who admits he is the defender’s biggest critic, feels that Tavernier does need to show a bit more defensive stability.

“James, as a defender, has a responsibility to make sure we have a clean sheet to work from,” Murty said.

“He sometimes has to consider that more often because he has really strong attacking instincts and he may need to temper them for the good of the team. It was just a simple way of making him more aware of being a team player.”

Tavernier looks likely to start for Rangers in their next match, which comes against Hamilton on Sunday.

Rangers head into the contest on the back of two straight victories, and will be looking to build on their momentum.

If Murty’s side can pick up the three points in the fixture, they could leapfrog Aberdeen and move into second place in the Scottish Premiership standings.
