The next generation of Ibrox stars stormed to a 5-2 win for Glasgow Rangers reserves, but Graeme Murty wasn’t pleased.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel, Graeme Murty has said that Rangers reserves’ 5-2 win over Partick Thistle on Monday wasn’t good enough.

The Gers romped into a 3-0 half-time lead following goals from Josh McPake, Liam Burt and Matthew Shiels.

McPake grabbed another from the penalty spot early in the second half, before Dapo Mebude struck on 83 minutes to make it 5-1, but Thistle snatched a second consolation late on.

Murty, who managed Rangers’ senior side for most of last season, acknowledged that his troops scored some ‘excellent goals’ but admitted that he wasn’t pleased to see a reduction in intensity from the young lads.

He said: “I’ve just told the players I didn’t think it was good enough. There were some really good bits but they didn’t push themselves hard enough to maintain our standards.

“Some excellent goals as you said but we were too happy to drift off that high standard. I thought we got what we deserved in the second half.”

Apart from the result, the other good news for Rangers and Murty was the return of Serge Atakayi, who made his return to the pitch after a four-month absence.

Atakayi, who moved to Ibrox in 2016 from Finnish side FF Jaro, has only managed one Premiership appearance for the light Blues, which came in a 7-1 win over Motherwell earlier this season.
