Graeme Murty shares why Jamie Murphy was angry and frustrated against St Johnstone

Rangers beat St Johnstone 4-1 on Tuesday night to continue their fine form.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty has told The Scottish Sun that winger Jamie Murphy was angry with the hard challenges heading his way during Tuesday night’s 4-1 win over St Johnstone.

The Gers were looking to pick up a sixth win in seven league games having beaten Hearts 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, and they did just that with a fine performance against St Johnstone.

James Tavernier got the ball rolling with an early penalty after Alfredo Morelos had been brought down by Alan Mannus, with Josh Windass smashing home Greg Docherty’s clever pass for 2-0, and his tenth goal in seven games.

Sean Goss curled home a fine free kick to make it 3-0 to Rangers before the break, with Morelos getting himself on the scoresheet after the restart, flicking a nonchalant header into the net from Tavernier’s cross.

Jason Kerr pulled back a consolation for St Johnstone, but this was all about Rangers and yet another impressive attacking display from Murty’s men, who have now dropped just five points in the last nine league games.

However, it wasn’t all good news for Rangers, as January signing Jamie Murphy was taken off injured after 77 minutes, after being challenged by midfielder Matty Willock.

Rangers are now left sweating over the Brighton loanee’s fitness, especially with an Old Firm derby to come in less than a fortnight, and Murty commented on the situation after the game.

Murty has told The Scottish Sun that Murphy was ‘frustrated and angry’ with the tackles put in on him by St Johnstone players, and Rangers must now assess his injury and hope for the best.

“There are a few knocks, a few sore ones. Jamie was the most obvious one,” said Murty. “He was in a bit of pain and he was a bit frustrated and a bit angry with some of the tackles that he had to put up with. I don’t want to jinx anything by saying how bad it might be, I don’t want to talk ourselves into it. We will assess it, we will try and be calm about it and we will make sure that he will get the requisite care,” he added.
