Graeme Murty shares Rangers’ January transfer plan, admits daily discussions are ongoing

Rangers are still looking for a new manager after Derek McInnes snubbed a move to Ibrox.

Rangers caretaker boss Graeme Murty has told STV that director of football Mark Allen will be in charge of transfers during the January transfer window.

The Gers remain without a manager having sacked Pedro Caixinha back in October, and remain in a state of chaos off the pitch nearly two months since making the change.

Last week, Rangers finally made an approach for a new manager, but saw Aberdeen snub their bid for Derek McInnes, before McInnes himself then shut the door on a move to his boyhood club.

That means that caretaker boss Murty – in his second stint this year – remains in charge, and whilst off-field matters are chaotic, on-field matters are at least going well.

Rangers have won five of their seven games under Murty, including Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Ross County, but with no manager in place, January transfers become somewhat complicated.

With just weeks to go until the start of the January transfer window, it was unclear just what Rangers’ plan would be, but Murty has offered an insight today.

Murty has told STV that he won’t have a say on the transfers at Ibrox as they search for a permanent manager, with director of football Mark Allen taking the lead on signings.

Murty added that he will attempt to help the recruitment staff find the right targets, and discussions are going on daily in a bid to identify the right players for the Gers.

“Our recruitment department and Mark are looking at targets,” sand Murty. “They’re looking at players with the characteristics required to play for this football club. We are in daily discussions but as it comes closer to that time and individual players, you’ll have to talk to Mark because he’s in charge of that side of it at the moment in the set-up that we currently have.”

“I’m not involved in identifying targets. I’m involved in identifying characteristics and areas of the squad that we possibly need to strengthen. When it comes down to individual targets it’ll be down to Mark and his recruitment team to put a group of targets or available players there and select the best one from that group,” he added.
