Rangers handed Greg Docherty his dream move to Ibrox on deadline day.
Rangers manager Graeme Murty has told The Scottish Sun that analysing Hamilton Academical’s 2-0 win at Ibrox helped the club decide to sign midfielder Greg Docherty.
Rangers played out a stunning game on Sunday afternoon, as they beat Hamilton 5-3 in a topsy-turvy encounter at New Douglas Park, with Josh Windass hitting a hat-trick for the visitors.
The game also saw Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty made his first return to Hamilton since leaving the Accies for Ibrox during last month’s transfer window, featuring for 90 minutes against his former club.
Docherty, 21, had only made substitute appearances in the league for Rangers since his £675,000 move to Ibrox (STV), but was handed a start against his former club, improving in the second half after a frantic first half display.
Docherty – a boyhood Rangers fan – will be delighted to have made his first league start for the club he grew up supporting, and manager Murty has now discussed just why Rangers signed him.
Murty has told The Scottish Sun that Rangers were analysing Hamilton’s 2-0 win at Ibrox from November – a game in which Docherty tallied an assist – and Murty felt it was ‘the Greg Docherty show’ as he impressed in midfield.
Murty noted that Rangers had Docherty on their radar for some time, but his impressive display against the Gers helped make the decision to push for his signature in January.
“We had a few clips put together from that game when we did an analysis on Accies,” said Murty. “Watching it, it was the Greg Docherty show! For the second goal he bursts from midfield, showing good energy, good legs. A good cross and goal. If it was our goal, I’d be really, really happy with it. We have Greg in the building but he was on the club’s radar before that. We knew about him for a while but he had quite a good day in that game,” he added.
