Graeme Murty sends Rangers supporters a message following recent gesture

Rangers coach Graeme Murty has told the club’s official website that the supporters’ banner thanking him following his spell as interim boss left him with a lump in his throat.

Murty was promoted from coaching the youth side and put in charge of the Gers’ first-team following Mark Warburton’s departure from Ibrox in February before Pedro Caixinha’s appointment was confirmed last month.

Although results were mixed during Murty’s tenure – they lost to Dundee and Inverness – the supporters were incredibly appreciative of the work that the 42-year-old did, with his spell in charge ending with an emphatic 6-0 win over Hamilton and a draw against Celtic at Parkhead.

That prompted some of the fans to bring a banner to Caixinha’s first game in charge – the 4-0 Scottish Premiership win over Hamilton – thanking Murty, who has now returned to his previous role, for his efforts, and he has responded with a similarly grateful message.

“I’ve got to tell you, [I had] a little lump in my throat when I got it,” he told the club’s official website.

“The first-team players gave me a bit of stick for having a banner out but I thought it was a fantastically classy touch and I was incredibly humbled by it.

“I just want to thank the supporters because it was a fantastic moment for me and my family but all the way through it, I thought they understood what we were trying to do and they understood that we were just trying to get the players to a better place and I think we actually did that, so I thank them for their continued support.”

Having people like Murty who the fans are behind may help the Gers in the quest to close the gap at the top, as there will undoubtedly be a lot more positivity than there seemed to be during the latter stages of Warburton’s tenure.

While Murty was there when the current Nottingham Forest boss was in charge, his reputation was significantly enhanced by the work he did while working with the first-team, and the supporters will certainly not forget how well he did in fairly difficult circumstances.
