Jason Cummings started in Glasgow Rangers’ most recent Scottish Premiership clash, with Alfredo Morelos dropping to the Ibrox side’s bench.

Graeme Murty has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that he decided to pick Jason Cummings ahead of Alfredo Morelos for Rangers’ trip to Partick Thistle to freshen things up due to the number of games that the Gers face in a short space of time.

Before the trip to Firhill, Cummings was still awaiting his first Scottish Premiership start for the Gers. He had started the game against Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup, but had been Morelos’ understudy in the league up until the Partick clash.

However, Murty rotated his options for Tuesday night’s clash. The decision may not have come as a major surprise to a large portion of the Rangers fans as Morelos endured a pretty miserable afternoon in the Gers’ most recent clash, the 2-1 defeat to Hibernian at Ibrox.

But Murty seemed to suggest that Morelos’ display against Hibs was not the reason for the change, but rather, the fixture list was the main factor behind his decision.

“It’s just freshening up,” he told Rangers’ official YouTube channel.

“We’ve got lots of games coming up. We’re going to need to utilise the whole squad, so I thought a little bit of a change up front, little bit of pace, little bit of impetus provided by Jason would be a good thing. We’ve also got Alfredo on the bench, ready to go so it’s just a case of freshening things up.”

Morelos’ spell at Ibrox has been a slightly bizarre one. He still tops the Scottish Premiership charts with 11 goals coming this term, but rather than score consistently over the last few months, he has gone through two brilliant spells with one incredibly long run in between where he went 10 games in all competitions without scoring.

And having now gone two league games without a goal – which is the second longest barren spell he has had in the league since arriving – Murty may perhaps be hoping that showing that he is not afraid to take him out of the side will help him get back on track and rediscover his best form.
