Glasgow Rangers suffered back to back defeats at Ibrox to leave them facing a fight for second place in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty looks on during the Rangers v Celtic Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Graeme Murty has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that it was a tactical decision to replace Sean Goss with Jason Holt at half-time of Rangers’ defeat to Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The Gers went into the game at Ibrox looking to bounce back from last weekend’s exhilarating defeat to Celtic that essentially ended any talk of a potential title race in the Scottish Premiership.

Russell Martin of Rangers hits the post with a header during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, it was Killie who took the three points to leave the Light Blues facing a real fight for second place in the division. Murty has come in for criticism after the result, and one of the key decisions that he made during the game was to replace Goss with Holt at the break. And after the game, the manager explained that it was a tactical decision rather than due to an injury.

“It was tactical. I just wanted more energy on the pitch. I wanted more intensity, but as I said, it’s no reflection on Sean. I just wanted to change things up and have different personnel on there to add some bite into the middle and add some tempo to it,” he told Rangers’ official YouTube channel.

Jason Holt of Rangers tracked by James Forrest of Celtic during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers fans will be disappointed to see what has happened to Goss’ form over the past couple of weeks. The 22-year-old was exceptional during the first couple of months of his loan spell at Ibrox and looked to be a player that the fans would be desperate to see sign a permanent deal this summer.

However, the Queens Park Rangers-owned midfielder was poor against Celtic and failed to cope with Youssouf Mulumbu on Saturday. Unfortunately for Rangers however, Holt was little better and the Gers now go into the international break knowing that they face a serious battle trying to hold onto second place when the season resumes.
