Graeme Murty says the Rangers team reacted positively to news he will be the boss at Ibrox until the end of the season.
Graeme Murty was appointed as Rangers manager until the end of the season yesterday and admitted it was a position he never expected to be in.
Murty stepped in as caretaker after Pedro Caixinha was fired in October, and while form has been mixed, there has been enough positive signs to convince the board to continue with him after failing in their efforts to appoint Derek McInnes.
Murty spoke to Rangers official website yesterday and shared how the team reacted to the news.
He said he received a warm greeting from the players, and paid tribute to them, making clear his desire that the team can bond together over the coming months to become a success.
Murty said: “I’ve had hearty handshakes with them, some pats on the back. Some of them find it quite amusing to call me gaffer.
“How it’s taken ultimately will be proved by what they do on the football pitch, I hope we can really bond and push on in the second half of the season.
“I never thought I would sit here as a manager, now I have that, I want to be good at it and grasp the opportunity.”
Murty is clearly not kidding himself that he has made it, he knows now the pressure is really on and he must get results.
That is why he added that while he had a warm greeting from the Rangers players, he knows this is purely superficial right now, and if they are really buying into his methods, they must demonstrate it home and away, week in and week out.
Rangers sit in third in the Premiership although had climbed to second until their defeat last weekend. With Celtic suffering their first loss of the season last week, it is all to play for.
