Glasgow Rangers secured their Scottish Cup quarter-final spot, but the Ibrox side were given a scare.

Rangers imanager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Graeme Murty has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that he refuses to criticise Wes Foderingham too strongly after his mistake in Rangers’ win over Ayr in the Scottish Cup, and insisted that the goalkeeper retains his full support.

Foderingham made a rare mistake in the early stages of the Gers’ Scottish Cup tie as David Bates’ backpass prompted the stopper to take a poor first touch which allowed Alan Forrest the chance to slide in and get to the ball first. The collision between the pair resulted in the ball – agonisingly from a Rangers perspective – trickling over the line to hand the League One side an early lead.

The Gers would score six times before the full-time whistle however, to ensure that Foderingham’s error counted for little and the Scottish Premiership side would be the team heading into the next round.

And speaking after the game, Murty suggested that he will continue to back the Englishman despite the mistake.

“It can happen at any time, especially the way we want to play. We want to play with Wes as the next outfield player. We want to be able to utilise him,” he told Rangers’ official YouTube channel.

“These things happen, he went and pressed at a good time and they managed to get a goal from it. And as frustrating as it is for Wes, he knows that we’ve got his back and these things are part of football.

“Wes has taken ownership of it but I never had any doubts that he’s a big enough guy to come back from that. And I thought that in the second-half, he looked comfortable.”

In fairness to Foderingham, he has been one of Rangers’ best players throughout the campaign with his form often proving a rare highlight during the latter stages of Pedro Caixinha’s brief tenure.

With the mistake not costing the side and with Foderingham bailing Rangers out on a number of occasions, there is little reason for Murty to read too much into the error and make a drastic call. And judging by his comments, it appears that the manager has no plans to make a change.
