Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have an out-of-form striker but dropping him would damage him more.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers is seen prior to the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Graeme Murty told a press conference via Rangers TV on Thursday that he might drop Alfredo Morelos for tonight’s trip to Dundee.

The 21-year-old hitman bagged eight goals in his first 10 games for Rangers but Morelos is enduring a poor run of form which has seen him go nine games without finding the net.

The Colombian, signed for £1 million Pedro Caixinha, hasn’t scored since the Portuguese manager was sacked and it seems likely that the uncertainty surrounding his replacement is doing Morelos no good.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers gets taken down by Peter Hartley of Motherwell during the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

This is clearly a very talented player, but one very short on confidence at the moment and caretaker boss Murty might well shatter him even more by dropping him to the bench.

Every striker endures poor spells but it’s often said that the remedy for such struggles is to allow them to play through their poor form in the hope and expectation that it will click again eventually.

Granted, Rangers have been waiting over two months for the former HFK Helsinki marksman to score another goal, but the wait must go on because he is proven to be their best, most dangerous asset.

Murty isn’t getting the Rangers job long term – every man and his dog can see that – but the 43-year-old has a responsibility to hand over the reins without doing major damage beforehand.

Dropping Morelos wouldn’t do long-term damage to the lad’s confidence, but Caixinha’s successor will need him firing on all cylinders if Rangers are to salvage something from an already-disastrous season and that’s difficult if your best player isn’t up for it.
