Glasgow Rangers caretaker boss Graeme Murty has been asked whether he has applied for the Ibrox job on a permanent basis.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Graeme Murty has confirmed to Rangers’ official website that he has not applied for the manager’s job and does not intend to, but only because he is already an employee for the Gers and will do whatever job is asked of him.

Murty is the current caretaker at Ibrox following Pedro Caixinha’s departure towards the end of last month, and the 43-year-old has been situated near the top of the betting market since the Portuguese was sacked – though Derek McInnes has been the overwhelming favourite for much of that time.

With the international break now in the past and Murty set to take charge of his third game of this spell, it would surely be fair to assume that he may be becoming a contender for the post, especially as he has overseen two wins so far.

And while Murty confirmed that he had not applied for the job and suggested that he does not plan to, he hinted that that was not because he did not want the job on a permanent basis.

“I haven’t, no,” he told Rangers’ official YouTube channel when asked whether he had applied for the job.

“I don’t think I should have to,” he then responded when asked if he will apply.

“The club will [receive a lot of applications], and the club should, but I’m here, I’m a Rangers employee, what role I have at the club is up to people far, far, far above me so that will be down to them to choose. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll just do the best at whatever job they see fit to put me in.”

While Murty’s lack of experience with the first-team, and as a senior manager in general, may make some supporters wary about the prospect of him getting the job on a permanent basis, there is no question that the way he is conducting himself is winning many over and he is backing up what he is saying by overseeing a couple of impressive results.

He may not be a leading contender for the fans perhaps, but if he continues to pick up wins during his time in interim charge, the board will surely not be able to rule out taking him more seriously if they are not already.
