Scour every transfer across every league in Europe this summer and you will be hard pressed to find a better-value purchase than McKay, who left Rangers for a mere £500,000 according to BBC Sport.
The Scottish winger has hit the ground running at Forest, scoring four goals and providing seven more in 13 league starts.
Those numbers, while impressive, do not paint a fair picture of McKay’s impact at the City Ground.
Whenever the 22-year-old has found the back of the net, the Tricky Trees have gone on to victory.
McKay has been an instant crowd-pleaser because of his silky dribbling, and there has been an end product to much of his pace and trickery, which is not always easy to find at Championship level.
Together with Kieran Dowell, McKay has made Forest one of the most stylish and creative attacking units in the division, and has helped restore hope at the club after a long period of negativity.
Mark Warburton brought McKay through at Rangers and is now getting the best out of him in the East Midlands. It is a combination which could yet inspire a once-unlikely playoff push for Forest.
