Graeme Souness has told Super Sunday, which was broadcast on Sky Sports, that Liverpool need to bring Fabinho back into their team on Thursday against Chelsea.

Fabinho was unable to play for Liverpool against Sheffield United last night due to injury.

However, Jurgen Klopp said after the match that the Brazilian should be back in midweek.

And Souness feels that Fabinho needs to be brought into Liverpool’s defence to tighten them up.

“You’re only as strong as your weakest link in the football team. They looked a bit vulnerable to a couple of long balls and flick ons tonight,” Souness said.

“They’ll be [up against] a bigger threat on Thursday night when they play Chelsea and you’ve got to play him [Fabinho] at the back.”

Fabinho may be a midfielder by trade, but he has looked comfortable in Liverpool’s defence whenever called upon.

With the Reds struggling so much for defensive options, it does appear that Fabinho is now the best central defender they have at the club.

Liverpool actually kept a clean sheet last night, as they won 2-0 against the Blades, but Ozan Kabak in particular had a couple of nervy moments in the 90 minutes.

With Chelsea possessing more attacking flair than Sheffield United, Liverpool’s defence will surely come under more pressure in midweek.

And Fabinho’s return would, therefore, be a major boost to their chances of success.
