According to James Pearce, Harvey Elliott received a telling off after Liverpool suffered a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal on October 9th.

Harvey Elliott criticised after Liverpool defeat

Well, it wasn’t Jürgen Klopp, nor any of the 19-year-old’s teammates, who gave him the dressing down following defeat at the Emirates Stadium two weeks ago.

Instead, it was Elliott’s father who criticised his son for allowing Ben White to waltz past him with ease, before sending in a dangerous cross which almost saw the Gunners go 4-2 up.

Pearce – who works for The Athletic – wrote: “Father and son always have a lengthy post-match debrief and after the defeat to Arsenal, Harvey got it in the ear when he got home for allowing Ben White to get away from him to deliver a cross. Always eager to learn, he studied the footage and realised he should have got tighter.”

Scott Elliott is not just the teenager’s father, but also a Liverpool fan himself, so he has extra motivation to ensure his son sharpens up when out on the pitch.

Klopp clearly felt that the England Under-21 international responded well to that minor mistake, as he was entrusted to start the 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday ahead of club captain Jordan Henderson.

Harvey Elliott stepped up for Liverpool

Against a side as formidable as Manchester City, it would’ve been easy for Elliott to shrink.

However, the Liverpool No.19 was able to play the game as well as the occasion, delivering a monumental performance which helped the Reds pick up a vital three points.

As WhoScored shows, Elliott had two shots against the Citizens, while also recording one key pass.

The teenager also finished the game with an impressive pass success rate of 85.2% – despite finding himself up against the likes of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan in midfield.

Klopp has proven himself capable of polishing rough diamonds into superstars previously – Mario Gotze is just one example – and we see no reason why Elliott cannot be the next prodigy to develop under the German.
