Rangers dropped more points in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend.
Gordon Smith has urged Steven Gerrard to select Rangers youngster Ross McCrorie more often because he has the ‘winning mentality’ which is currently ‘needed’ at the club.
In recent weeks, the Gers have produced a number of poor results and performances, including being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen on home soil.
Added with that, they have fallen further behind leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premiership as it seems they will now be settling for a runners-up spot this term.
Former Premiership player Smith picked out young midfielder McCrorie as someone who Gerrard should look towards during these final few months of the season.
“There have been one or two curious examples of team selection,” Smith told the Sunday Post. “For example, Rangers have never suffered a domestic defeat when young Ross McCrorie is in the side.
“It could be a question of fitting him into the system favoured by Gerrard. He strikes me as someone with the winning mentality needed at the club.”
Over the course of this season, McCrorie, who operates in front of the defence, has been used in a sporadic fashion by his manager.
The 21-year-old has played 25 matches in all competitions and been part of only one losing side – that was Rangers’ 1-0 defeat against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.
Other than that, he has not tasted a defeat when he has been on the field, winning 11 out of the 14 Premiership games Gerrard has either started him in or given minutes to from the bench [transfermarkt].
After the international break, Gerrard and his players will be straight into the action, starting with their Old Firm clash against bitter rivals Celtic.
