Former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes is the current favourite for the Ibrox post.

Gordon Smith has told The Sunday Post that Derek McInnes not shutting down the rumours linking him with Rangers is the reason that he suspects that the Aberdeen boss wants the job.

McInnes has been heavily linked with the Ibrox post ever since Pedro Caixinha left the club towards the end of last month, but MailSport reports that there has been no official approach from the Gers for their former midfielder.

With speculation seemingly yet to turn into a concrete approach, McInnes could arguably distance himself from the job by insisting that he wants to stay at Aberdeen where he has done some fantastic work, and Smith has suggested that McInnes not pledging his future to the Pittodrie side as of yet has left him thinking that the 46-year-old is keen on taking the job.

“McInnes is undoubtedly the main candidate, and my impression is that he must be interested in taking the job,” he told The Sunday Post.

“If he wasn’t, he would surely have released a statement saying he that he wasn’t interested. That would have brought some reassurance to the Aberdeen fans.

“Of course, he may be waiting for an official approach from Rangers. He might well want to play everything by the book and then accept or turn down the job.

It is certainly surprising that Rangers have not made an approach yet given that the international break would be an ideal time to get their new man through the door.

And if it is McInnes that the Gers want as their number one target, they are arguably taking a risk taking so long to confirm their interest with an approach as, having been so heavily linked since the position became available, McInnes would be forgiven for wondering how keen the Ibrox hierarchy actually are about bringing him in, the longer the process takes.
