Gordon Smith has stated that he expects Sheyi Ojo to become a ‘squad player’ at first if the Liverpool winger signs for Rangers this summer.

The Daily Star are reporting that 21-year-old Ojo is set to sign a new deal at Anfield before he is loaned out by the Premier League club, with Rangers interested in his services.

This season, Steven Gerrard had Liverpool’s Ryan Kent at Ibrox and the Oldham-born player thrived in Glasgow despite his team failing to win any trophies.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer’s official YouTube account, Smith believes if speedster Ojo agrees to link up with Gerrard then just like Kent, he will work his way into the first team before establishing himself properly.

On Ojo links: “He [Gerrard] has got the connections,” Smith told PLZ Soccer. “He can get players along. He will be speaking to them saying ‘this player is a real talent’ – he’ll have the first choice probably on the ones that are most talented.

“This is probably someone that just fits in, maybe a squad player, but maybe somebody who could play regularly like Ryan Kent became. I think he went from being a squad player to start with. They’ll be wanting to do the same with this kid too.”

The Light Blues are seemingly wasting no time in bulking up their squad for next season. Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones are already through the door as Gerrard will be keen on adding more fresh legs to his squad.

It was a fairly successful yet disappointing season for Rangers because they failed to win a trophy, but they have shown vasts amounts of improvement under Gerrard since his arrival last summer.

In order for them to take the next step, Gerrard’s players must show more consistency because that was one area that let them down this season.
