Former Rangers and Ibrox star Gordon Smith speaks highly of Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.

Former Rangers star Gordon Smith has written in The Sunday Post that Celtic defender Kieran Tierney is top class.

Tierney has been on the books of Celtic his entire professional club football career so far and has a contract with the Glasgow giants until June 2021, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

The 20-year-old is one of the best left-backs in the Scottish Premiership and is one of the best young players in entire Europe.

The Scotland international defender has also shown his versatility by playing as a centre-back on occasions.

Former Rangers star Smith, who played at Ibrox from 1977 to 1980 before returning for a loan spell from Brighton & Hove Albion in 1982, has praised Tierney and has said that he is top class.

The 62-year-old Scotsman has also compared the Celtic defender to Italian legend Paolo Maldini.

Maldini is one of the greatest defenders of all time and played for Italian giants AC Milan his entire professional career.

The 49-year-old won Serie A seven times, the Champions League on five occasions and the UEFA Super Cup four times.

AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini acknowledges the applause of the fans during his last match between AC Milan and AS Roma on May 24, 2009 in Milan, Italy.

“Only just a couple of months out of his teens – he turned 20 in June – he has already won four Scotland caps plus both league (two) and Scottish Cup winners medals,” Smith wrote in The Sunday Post about Tierney.

“And on Wednesday, when he ran out with Celtic for the cup tie with Kilmarnock, he did so, in Scott Brown’s absence, as captain of the club he grew up supporting as a boy.

“He is already top class. What’s more, as his club manager Brendan Rodgers has said, he is only going to get better.

“In fact, the young player he reminds me of is not from these shores but from Italy, Paolo Maldini. I say that because of the way both became near-instant fixtures in their respective first teams after making the breakthrough.”
