Celtic visit Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox this coming weekend.
Gordon Smith has told The Sunday Post that he expects Saturday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox to end in a draw.
High-flying Celtic visit Rangers this weekend on the back of a 4-0 demolition of Ross County at the weekend – the perfect tonic for Brendan Rodgers’s side after being decimated by Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener.
The Gers, on the other hand, missed the chance to move top of the Premiership on the Friday by drawing 2-2 with 10-man Partick Thistle at Firhill in what was widely believed to be two points dropped by Pedro Caixinha’s troops.
Rangers lost five of the six meetings with Celtic last season, but this time Caixinha has a not-so-secret weapon in the form of Alfredo Morelos, who has eight goals in nine games since joining the Ibrox club from HJK Helsinki in the summer.
The consensus remains that Rangers have a lot of work to do in order to reach the Hoops’ level, but Smith, who had two spells on the blue half of the Old Firm divide as a player, says that his former club “definitely” has a chance if the likes of Morelos turn up.
“If they can win their battles, and Morelos can take his chances, then Rangers will have a chance. Definitely,” he told The Sunday Post.
“My gut feeling, however, is that this first derby of the season will end as a draw.
“That result would be liable to leave fans wanting more and would also buy Caixinha more time to develop his side.”
