Former Ibrox star Gordon Smith has suggested in The Sunday Post that ex-Aston Villa and Chelsea defender John Terry would be a good signing for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

Terry is a free agent at the moment, having left Villa in the Championship in England at the end of this past season.

The 37-year-old central defender is a Chelsea legend, and played with Liverpool great and new Rangers manager Gerrard for the England national football team.

Former Rangers star Smith, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 1977 until 1980, has suggested that Terry would be a good signing for Gerrard’s Gers team in the summer transfer window.

Smith wrote in The Sunday Post about Terry: “He is out of contract after his season at Aston Villa, so would be available.

“But even at 37, he would be able to command a salary far out of Rangers’ reach, with Manchester United credited with an interest.

“So he would have to take it on as a footballing mission, something we have seen plenty of players do in the past – Bruno Alves being a recent example.

“There are historic similarities with Terry Butcher, albeit he was at the other end of his career. But I think John Terry would have a similar impact in helping the club to bring other big names north.”

Blockbuster signing

Terry may be past his prime, but as the Chelsea legend showed at Villa this past season, he can still do a very good job.

The Championship is a much tougher and competitive domestic league than the Scottish Premiership, and the 37-year-old would be a success at Rangers.

The 2012 Champions League winner would be a blockbuster signing for Rangers.
