Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been in disciplinary trouble of late, and Gordon Smith has told The Sunday Post that it’s time for drastic action.

The Gers drew 1-1 at Dundee on Sunday afternoon in a poor result and performance, as Steven Gerrard’s men failed to break down a struggling side who played for 70 minutes with 10 men.

After a home defeat to Aberdeen, it’s two poor results in a row for Gerrard and co, whose disciplinary problems continue to made headlines.

With Morelos red carded against Aberdeen, Rangers have now picked up eight red cards this season, and Colombian hitman Morelos is becoming a problem in this regard.

The 22-year-old is supremely talented, as seen by his record of 17 goals in 30 games this season, but that doesn’t tell the whole story of his season so far.

Morelos is something of a hot-head, and has now racked up 12 yellow cards and three red cards, earning a reputation as a tempestuous striker with a short fuse.

Teams are unsurprisingly trying to rile up Morelos and get him sent off, and ex-Rangers player and director of football Smith has suggested that the Gers now need to take drastic action and find a psychologist or anger-management consultant to deal with Morelos and his petulance, for the good of the club and the striker himself.

“It might sound drastic, but Rangers need to start looking for a good sports psychologist or anger-management consultant,” said Smith. “I say that because, after watching Alfredo Morelos get sent off again at Ibrox in midweek, it’s clear something needs to be done. That he reacts to situations instinctively and believes it is OK to do so, because he has got to this stage of his career acting this way.”

“He is, remember, only 22 years old. Not a kid anymore, but also not that experienced in terms of his career path. Which is why, if he will not respond to direct instructions from his manager, Rangers have to look for outside help. Having the player work with a sports psychologist would potentially bring benefits in terms of bringing about an improvement in his discipline. Just as importantly, it would also help Morelos himself,” he added.
