Glasgow Rangers boss Mark Warburton seemed keen on bringing Diego Poyet to Ibrox.
Writing in The Sunday Post, Gordon Smith has backed Rangers’ reported pursuit of former West Ham United starlet Diego Poyet.
Rangers terminated Joey Barton’s contract with immediate effect earlier this week after the controversial midfielder had a bust-up with team-mate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton following the club’s 5-1 defeat by Celtic back in September.
With the Gers now down a player, The Sun reported that Warburton could bring Poyet to Ibrox on a short-term deal, with the Uruguayan midfielder also capable of playing in more advanced roles.

And Gordon Smith has written in The Sunday Post that signing the former West Ham man is far more of a Warburton-type signing than Barton ever was.
He wrote: “With Barton’s wage off the bill, Warburton can turn his attention to using the cash to freshen up his squad in January.
“Diego Poyet, once of West Ham, has already been mentioned as a possible target.
“As a young striker with something to prove, he fits the profile of the type of signings Warburton was after far more than closely than Barton – at 34, a veteran – ever did.”

Poyet is the son of Premier League legend Gus Poyet, but he has a ways to go before he emulates his father in the achievement stakes.
At the moment, he is a free transfer following his release from the Irons in the summer.
