Glasgow Rangers boss Mark Warburton took 12 players to Ibrox, but Gordon Smith has high hopes for one in particular.
Gordon Smith has told Sky Sports that Philippe Senderos can have a similar impact at Rangers as the legendary David Weir.
The 31-year-old centre-back joined Rangers on a one-year deal last week, after leaving Grasshoppers in his native Switzerland.
The former Arsenal man has now been at seven clubs since leaving the Gunners in 2010 – including AC Milan and Valencia – and he also played a prominent role in helping the Premier League giants reach the Champions League final in 2006.
He is not short on experience, having also won 57 caps for Switzerland, and Smith, who had two spells with Rangers, believes he could be the Gers’ modern-day equivalent of Weir, now manager Mark Warburton’s assistant.
“He is a very experienced player and sometimes if you bring in a player like that it can help,” Smith told Sky Sports.
“David Weir is a great example of that. He came into Rangers in the latter part of his career and did a fantastic job and Senderos may be able to do that kind of job too.”
Weir spent five years at Rangers and only left in 2012, at the age of 42. He inspired the club to three Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.
Senderos could make his debut for the Ibrox club on Saturday when Warburton’s side visit bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
It will be a game which could be determined by which team manages their emotions the best, and well-travelled characters such as Senderos could play a big role in helping less experienced figures through what promises to be a heated battle.
