Real Madrid reportedly want to sign Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspur in the future but a good World Cup with Denmark could speed up that pursuit.
Modric made the switch from Spurs to Los Blancos himself in 2012, becoming a key part of their success since with four Champions League triumphs, one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey; among other accolades.
While Madrid are not looking to move the 32-year-old out of their squad just yet, they are aware that the Croatia international will need to be replaced in the not too distant future and think Eriksen could be just the man to do that.
World Cup influence
Ever since Florentino Perez was named president for the first of his two terms at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in 2000, the club have been associated with a ‘galaticos’ policy.
This essentially refers to the signing of high profile players and there is no better time to achieve that status than at the World Cup, with Eriksen set to represent Denmark at this summer’s tournament in Russia.
Real signed James Rodriguez from Monaco on the back of his golden boot winning performance at the 2014 edition and the Tottenham midfielder has the chance to make a similar impression this time around.
Apparently Eriksen’s hat-trick against the Republic of Ireland in the playoffs to help confirm his country’s place at the 2018 tournament already caught Perez’s eye and similar displays for the Danes over the next two months may see their pursuit brought forwards.
