Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher came up against a familiar face on international duty yesterday evening.
The Republic of Ireland held Belgium to a 2-2 draw at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
On the opposite side was former Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet.
The 34-year-old was on the Reds’ books until 2019 but Alisson’s arrival a year earlier rendered him a spectactor at Anfield during his final season under Jurgen Klopp.
Here’s what Mignolet sent to Kelleher on Twitter after the game:
Heroism
Kelleher is an extremely exciting goalkeeper at Liverpool.
The 23-year-old Irishman won’t be displacing Alisson anytime soon because, honestly, the Brazilian is among the world’s finest.
However, Kelleher is such a massive prospect.
At 23, his career hasn’t even really started yet but he impresses each and everytime that the Liverpool manager uses him.
Last month, Kelleher scored the winning penalty to help the Reds clinch the Carabao Cup following a shootout victory over Chelsea.
Not only that, but he was exceptional throughout the 120 minutes which preceded that.
Kelleher has managed only a handful of senior appearances in a Liverpool jersey but, so far, the signs are ever so promising.
Klopp’s problem is, how will he keep the youngster happy next season now that he has a taste for heroism?
