Dean Saunders has claimed that Manchester United should have signed Everton’s new boy, James Tarkowski, as he told talkSPORT.

The former striker added that Tarkowski would have been ‘good signing’ for Manchester United, but he is now in Everton colours.

The 29-year-old’s contract at relegated Burnley expired last month and Frank Lampard didn’t waste any time in bringing him to Merseyside.

Given that there is no transfer fee attached to the Tarkowski deal, then he would have attracted a lot more clubs because of the experience he would provide to that team.

Whilst Manchester United need refreshing and picking up after a woeful campaign last time out, someone like the Toffees probably need Tarkowski more than those from Old Trafford.

Nonetheless, this is what Saunders had to say about why Erik ten Hag should have added the hard-hitting centre-back to their ranks this summer.

“I think Tarkowski should have been a good signing for Manchester United,” said Saunders. “Whether they don’t think he is good enough, but he defends for his life, blocks shots and puts his body on the line.

“He’s not a brilliant footballer, but stop the ball going into your net, for a start.”

HOW WILL TARKOWSKI FAIR AT GOODISON?

Everton survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, with Burnley the ones dropping down to the second tier.

Life wasn’t easy for Tarkowski last season at Turf Moor, and in truth, it’s not going to be plain sailing at his new club either.

The Toffees had one of the worst defences last term, an away record to forget and they just couldn’t stop conceding from set-plays.

But perhaps their new man in the building will transform their defence by the experience, leadership and no-nonsense style he will bring to Merseyside.

In truth, it’s needed because Lampard isn’t exactly in a situation where he can dip into the market and splash the cash for new players.
