Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has praised Matt Doherty on BBC Sport for his performance against Brighton and Hove Albion away from home in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Conte has said that Republic of Ireland international right-back Doherty gave a good response during Tottenham’s match against Brighton.

Spurs won the Premier League game 1-0.

Doherty, who is a right-back by trade but is playing as a right wing-back for Tottenham, did well in the game, especially in the first half when he got into good positions.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star did not look particularly great on the ball on occasions, but that is mainly due to the fact that he had not started a competitive match for Tottenham since April.

While Doherty did fade away in the second half, he did well to make a late challenge on Leandro Trossard.

Conte said about Doherty: “I am happy because I had a good response from Matt Doherty, Yves Bissouma played from the start, a lot of positive things.”

Matt Doherty is a better player than Emerson Royal, and the Republic of Ireland international will hope to keep his place in the Tottenham starting lineup when the Brazilian returns from suspension.
