The Tottenham Hotspur star has just 18 months remaining on his current deal.

Mauricio Pochettino, Manager of Tottenham Hotspur and Christian Eriksen of Tottenham Hotspur arrive during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Watford at Wembley Stadium...

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino addressed the media last night, after his side’s 3-0 win away at Cardiff City, and responded when asked whether there has been any progress regarding Christian Eriksen’s ongoing contract talks with the club, as quoted by Football.London.

The Denmark international joined Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2013, and he has gone on to firmly establish himself as one of the club’s most important players, chalking up 62 goals and 78 assists in 251 appearances in all competitions.

Eriksen has been at his usual brilliant best this season, too, despite some injury problems towards the end of last year, with six goals and nine assists to his name in 25 outings.

The problem for Tottenham is that the 26-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer of 2020, so Pochettino will be desperate for one of his key men to be tied down to a new long-term deal.

The Argentine spoke to reporters last night, and suggested that there is still no news regarding Eriksen’s ongoing contract talks, as quoted by Football.London:

“I don’t have news. The phrase is no news is good news, in that case I don’t know. No news is good news.”

Tottenham currently sit six points adrift of league leaders Liverpool in the race for the title, although they have played a game more than Jürgen Klopp’s side.

If they are to have any chance whatsoever of winning the league this season, Eriksen will need to be on his very best form between now and May.

And signing a new long-term deal would certainly make a huge difference to his chances of doing just that.
