Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (13/03/21 at 12:15 pm) that Chris Wilder becoming Celtic’s next manager would be a ‘good move’.

But ex-Rangers striker Kris Boyd was in disagreement because he thinks Celtic are ‘going down the route of director of football’, which wouldn’t suit the 53-year-old.

On Saturday evening, Sheffield United confirmed that Wilder has left the club by ‘mutual consent’.

The Daily Mail claim that Wilder’s departure from his boyhood club has been in the pipeline with rows over transfers and those in suits wanting a director of football.

And that’s one of the reasons why Boyd feels Wilder doesn’t suit Celtic, but Merson backed the idea.

“Well, he has done a fantastic job at Sheffield United,” said Boyd. “Obviously, the Celtic job is up right now.

“But I think Celtic are going down the director of football route as well and that’s what Sheffield United are talking about. And potentially why Chris Wilder is going to lose his job (has now left).”

Merson responded: “I think the Celtic one works. You are going director of football which they want at Sheffield United but he doesn’t know the Scottish Premier League like he knows the Championship.

“So, for me, I think that works the Celtic one. I think the Celtic one would be a good move for him. I think you bring in a director of football because he doesn’t know that league and it will help him.”

Boyd added by claiming: “You sound like his agent.”

Celtic have time to appoint the next individual to take the pressure cooker of a hot seat at Parkhead during these coming months.

And if this appointment goes wrong then it can have a long-term damage, so Celtic have to make sure the person who replaces Neil Lennon understands the environment they are in and they can handle the troubles that will come their way.
