Jose Enrique has stated that his ‘good friend’ Joe Gomez ‘should stay’ at Liverpool after he was asked about his future, as he posted on Instagram.
The former left-back pointed out how his ‘good friend’ was once Liverpool’s main guy, alongside Virgil van Dijk, before injury struck.
Prior to that season-ending injury during the last campaign, not only was Gomez playing on a regular basis at the back.
But, the 24-year-old was also an England International and he has now lost both spots, mainly due to lack of game time and that injury.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if someone knocks on Liverpool’s door for the Englishman during these final few hours of transfer deadline day.
Nonetheless, even though Gomez is number four on Jurgen Klopp’s centre-back wishlist, Enrique still wants him to stay.
“Gomez, for me, I think he should stay,” said Enrique. “At the moment, he is the fourth option.
“He is a good friend of mine. But I don’t know what is really going on with him to be the fourth option. When he was at his best, he was one of the starters with Van Dijk.
“Then he was fighting with that position with Joel Matip. I am not sure if he is 100% with his injury, but I don’t really have inside information. Even if I did I wouldn’t give it up because he is my friend.
“But I don’t think it’s the moment to let Joe Gomez go when he is our fourth option.”
The issue facing Gomez is that he is now heading towards nearly two seasons without playing regular football.
That could be pretty harmful to a players career and his development, as Gomez is still at that stage.
The one positive for him at Anfield is that the Reds are still in every competition, so there are plenty of games where he can earn minutes.
And if he doesn’t leave on deadline day, then it wouldn’t be a surprise if he departs the club in the summer for regular football.
