‘Good for him’: Pundit glad international boss won’t be picking Tottenham player tonight

Chris Sutton has praised Gareth Southgate for not picking Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane against Wales this evening in the Daily Mail.

Tottenham’s Kane is set to be on the substitutes’ bench for the friendly match, with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be handed his debut.

The news that Kane will be rested comes after some debate between Jose Mourinho and Southgate in the public domain.

Mourinho suggested strongly that he didn’t want Kane to play in all three games for England over the international break.

And Sutton feels that Southgate should be credited for listening to the Tottenham boss, rather than being stubborn.

“After their to-ing and fro-ing, Gareth Southgate could have stuck two fingers up at Jose Mourinho and started Harry Kane for this friendly against Wales,” Sutton wrote.

“Reports suggest Southgate will rest Kane and start Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Good on the England boss.

“One, he will come out of this looking like the bigger man.

“And two, if Kane is saved for the Nations League fixtures, Calvert-Lewin will get the chance his free-scoring start to the season deserves.”

Tottenham supporters are likely to be relieved that Kane will be rested tonight.

Spurs have already had one injury scare on international duty, with Sergio Reguilon picking up a knock.

And the hope will be that Tottenham’s other players all come through representing their country unscathed.
