Kevin Campbell has thrown his backing behind Arsenal’s reported plan for David Luiz.

The veteran Brazilian defender is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium this summer but according to The Mail, the Gunners’ chief Edu will sign him to a new one-year deal.

It has only been a couple of weeks since Luiz got sent off in the defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers, picking up his third red card and conceding his sixth penalty for Arsenal in the space of 18 months.

The 33-year-old is certainly a divisive player, but head coach Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the leadership qualities that he brings on and off the pitch.

And former Gunners hitman Campbell is firmly behind his old club’s decision to keep him on.

He told The Blind Gooner’s podcast: “I think it’s a good bit of business if we do secure him. Many might not agree but I think leadership is so hard to come by. And he’s already in our building so why not let him continue the work he’s already doing?”

You can certainly see both sides of the argument but Campbell just might have a chance.

If all goes well in the summer window, Luiz won’t be first choice for Arsenal next season anyway, but he could and certainly would be a big asset to have on the bench.

If the North Londoners have any sort of European football next season, that’s a lot more games they’re committed to and rotation will, again, be key.
