Gonzalo Rodriguez has shone against Tottenham in the past and is a free agent this summer.
Fiorentina’s Gonzalo Rodriguez
Tottenham Hotspur already possess one of the meanest defences in the Premier League, but should not rest on their laurels.
Mauricio Pochettino has not been convinced about Kevin Wimmer, playing Eric Dier at centre-back when needed, and it has not been a success.
They need cover rather than replacements for Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld, and the solution to their need could be available on a free transfer.
Rodriguez has been at Fiorentina since 2012, signing after a successful eight seasons in Spain with Villarreal, leading the side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2006.
He is currently 32, and is an Argentine international. His performances have seen him assume the Fiorentina captaincy, and he has starred against Tottenham in the past in the Europa League.
The tough tackling centre-back has made 24 appearances this season for Fiorentina, but is weighing up his options with his contract at the club set to expire.
Rodriguez is a leader and would add real strength in depth for Tottenham, allowing them to move Kevin Wimmer on if that is Pochettino’s desire.
On a free transfer Tottenham could pull off one of the signings of the summer if they can bring him in, and double down on their defensive strength.
