If Southampton wanted to convince Danny Ings to snub the advances of Champions League clubs and sign a new contract at St Mary’s, they could have done without that Old Trafford debacle.

For the second time in the space of just 16 months, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints are writhing in a personal hell of their own making.

Manchester United ‘did a Leicester’ last night, cruising to a record-equalling 9-0 Premier League win.

And a penny for Ings’ thoughts?

According to talkSPORT, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur are circling like bloodthirsty vultures with the England international facing an uncertain future on the South Coast.

Talks over a new long-term deal have reached an impasse, with Ings’ contract due to expire in 2022.

Goal believes a striker whose dream Liverpool move was scuppered by injuries is desperate for a second chance to prove himself at the very top level.

Spurs, presuming they can snap a losing run of their own, would represent a substantial step up.

And Southampton supporters know it too.
