Well, Antonio Conte has reportedly left Steven Bergwijn out of his latest Tottenham Hotspur squad.
Bergwijn was absent from training on Wednesday and Football London report that Conte hasn’t brought him to Slovenia for tonight’s Europa Conference League clash with Mura.
The Dutch winger was fit as recently as Sunday because he was named on the bench by Conte in the 2-1 win over Leeds United.
But the former PSV attacker – brought in by Jose Mourinho in 2020 – cut a frustrated figure after failing to get on against United.
Bergwijn is yet to kick a ball under the Italian coach and if he isn’t injured, then the Tottenham boss might already be done with him.
Here’s how some Lilywhites fans are reacting to his reported absence:
Indication
The fact that Bergwijn was fit on Sunday and absent today is a big indication that it isn’t related to injury.
Conte is a no-nonsense manager and one who doesn’t suffer fools, so if this omission is linked with discipline then it wouldn’t be a big surprise, really.
Bergwijn is a good player and one who has shown glimpses of his talent since joining Tottenham.
But consistency has been a major issue, though this is hardly an ideal start under a new manager.
Still, you can’t write him off, particularly while the reason for his omission is unconfirmed.
