Tottenham and Newcastle’s chances of signing Carles Alena are now over.
Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino had made a ‘desperate’ attempt to convince him to join Spurs, without success.
The Sun had reported Newcastle United had also made an approach to try and land Alena.
Now it is official that they have lost out – and it could be forever.
Barcelona’s Carles Alena and Sergi Samper celebrate
Football Espana report Alena has signed his new deal, and it has a whopping 75 million Euro release clause (£66 million).
This figure is more than double Tottenham’s record spend on a player, and the prospect of them acquiring him any time soon appears to be over, and likewise with Newcastle, who have never spent more than £20 million on a single player.
Nou Camp
Alena is one of Barcelona’s brightest midfield prospects and has been likened to World Cup winner Andres Iniesta.
He is the Spain under-19 captain and made three La Liga appearances for Barcelona last season.
Tottenham and Newcastle might just have lost their only shot of getting him.
