Golf stars Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia celebrate as Spain lift the World Cup trophy

Englishman Justin Rose would have preferred Thomas Tuchel’s side to have played against Spain in the World Cup final.

Unfortunately, England lost to fierce rivals Argentina in the semi-final, which sparked controversy involving the Falklands Islands.

That might have played a part in Rose supporting Spain in the final and congratulating them after they won.

“Congratulations, Spain. Football won. What a brilliant World Cup,” Rose wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia attended the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium with his wife Angela.

Garcia posted several times on Instagram throughout the day and sent the following message on his way home.

“Unbelievable! What a win! So proud of everyone, not only the players but everyone who came and supported,” Garcia said.

“The atmosphere was amazing. I’m so proud and so happy to be Spanish and to have the chance to celebrate this amazing victory.”

The World Cup final overshadowed one of golf’s biggest events, The Open, which also took place on Sunday.
