Alasdair Gold has told his YouTube channel that Antonio Conte had promised his Tottenham players a few days off in the first week of the international break – if they beat Leicester City on Wednesday.
Of course, Spurs secured one of the results of the season – given they were losing to Leicester with about 10 seconds of injury time remaining. Harry Kane’s effort had been cancelled out by Patson Daka and James Maddison.
But the introduction of Steven Bergwijn changed the game. The Dutch flyer equalised on 95 minutes from close range, before moments later, rounding Kasper Schmeichel to score after a delightful pass from Kane.
The win sees Spurs climb to fifth in the Premier League and just a point behind West Ham – but boast three games in hand over David Moyes’ side. Gold has shared something interesting that Conte said before the game.
Indeed, Gold said that Conte promised his Tottenham players they could have the first few days off next week, with it being an international break, if they win. Same, with this weekend’s clash against Chelsea.
“I’m told Conte had promised, if they had won, a fair few more days off in the first week of the break. A positive result against Chelsea, they might get a couple more – takes it to a week. Golf holidays have been booked.”
Gold on Conte promise: Leicester result could be Tottenham catalyst
Coming into the match against Leicester, the feeling will have been low after two comprehensive defeats to Chelsea – in which Spurs looked flat, and missed Son Heung-min. But it was different at Leicester.
Even with Spurs losing 2-1, they had dominated large parts of the match – with Conte’s three-man midfield of Harry Winks, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp in midfield. It looked defensive, but it was anything but.
Spurs had 27 shots and 10 on target – their most this season. So, clearly, it was a performance deserving of a result. It could be season-defining result in the race for the top four.
