Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal are now the team that ‘everyone laughs at’, as he told the Overlap.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes added by saying that Arsenal will go through a period where they are ‘going to win the league’ and then another period where fans will be calling for Mikel Arteta’s head.

This season has perhaps defined the point Scholes was making because Arsenal started the campaign with three defeats on the bounce.

At one point, they were sitting bottom of the Premier League table, with zero points and no goals to their name.

But in recent weeks, they managed to pick themselves up, including winning the North London derby.

And whilst discussing Arsenal, both Scholes and Carragher were pretty brutal in what they had to say.

“It’s going to be that type of year for Arsenal,” said Scholes. “They are going to have three or four games where they are going to do great.

“Everybody is going to say ‘they are going to win the league’ and then they will have three or four games where Arteta is going to be out and sacked.”

Carragher added: “They are a team that everybody now laughs at, aren’t they, Arsenal.”

One thing is for sure, Arteta won’t be in the Emirates dugout for much long if things pan out in the same fashion, like they did last season.

There were a number of occasions last season when Arteta could have easily got the sack.

The winter period was a tough one for the club, then there was the defeat to Unai Emery’s Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final.

To get beaten by the man you replaced is never a good sign, but Arteta has been backed once again this summer and he now has no excuses.
