Arsenal hosted club legend Dennis Bergkamp’s son on trial for a week last month. The Dutch icon is one of the greatest players to wear the red and white of the Gunners and excitement levels rose when the news broke.

The legendary Dutchman spent more than a decade at Arsenal and helped the club become one of the most successful sides in England. He won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

Bergkamp’s son, Mitchel, worked with Steve Bould’s U23s set-up at London Colney in October. He came in as a free agent after being released by Dutch club Almere City at the end of last season.

The 22-year-old plays in a slightly deeper role than his father. A number 10 by trade who can also play as an attack-minded box-to-box midfielder, the younger Bergkamp was expected to impress.

However, history tells us great footballers’ sons don’t always inherit maestro genes.

Goal claims Arsenal have rejected the opportunity to sign Mitchel Bergkamp for free.

It appears Bould and Edu weren’t impressed by their former teammate’s son, and the Gunners won’t have another Bergkamp representing them any time soon.

Arsenal fans voiced their opinion on social media. While some pitied the amount of expectation on the youngster’s shoulders, others feel the Gunners may live to regret the decision.
