Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Matt Doherty is set to quit Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.

Tottenham only signed the former Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back for £15 million in the summer of 2020.

But it hasn’t been a brilliant first 18 months for the Irishman at Spurs.

The Athletic reported last week that the Lilywhites are interested in moving him on in January.

And Romano, speaking to his Here We Go podcast on Tuesday, has claimed there’s a ‘serious chance’ that the defender is leaving.

He told his Here We Go podcast: “Doherty has a serious chance to leave in January. Tottenham are also thinking about the outgoings. Doherty’s going to leave.”

Surprising?

Well, no not exactly.

Doherty started Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Southampton yesterday afternoon.

But the fact that Fabio Paratici signed Emerson Royal from Barcelona this past summer ought to indicate that even then, the Italian had reservations about the player.

Remember, Japhet Tanganga has also shown huge promise in this position at times and he could simply become Emerson’s deputy, if the former Wolves man does indeed leave.

At 29, Doherty remains in the prime of his career and if Antonio Conte doesn’t seem sold on him then leaving is certainly the best option for all parties.
