Son Heung-min has told Tuesday’s press conference – as per Football London – that it will be “poor, and very sad” if Tottenham do not continue to fight for the Champions League, or in the race for the top four in the Premier League.

Spurs are preparing to take on Milan in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night, having suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg. A game that remains in the balance but as things stand, Son and Spurs will be knocked out.

It comes after two successive wins over West Ham and Chelsea, strengthening their place in the top four. But then, two 1-0 losses in a row – ending their pursuit of the FA Cup, and then defeat to Wolves in the League on the weekend.

With Tottenham’s season now in the balance, Spurs take on Milan in the second leg – a crucial, crucial game. One that could have an impact on the future of Antonio Conte, too. £22m signing Son gave his verdict on Tottenham’s season.

“It was painful to get out of the FA Cup. To be a good season we have to do the best things we can. We’re still in the Champions League, fighting for top four. We have to go for these things otherwise it’s going to be poor and very sad.”

Son says it will be sad if Tottenham do not continue in Champions League

There is little chance that Spurs go on to win the Champions League. But, to show promise, and to show it was worth the fight to qualify for the top four last season – they have got to beat sides like Milan and actually have a go at it.

There are teams in this season’s Champions League that Spurs will deem beatable. If they get past Milan, they could go another step further. But with Spurs faltering in the last two games, it is up in the air how Spurs will react tomorrow.
