Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Tony Adams has been discussing Arsenal’s chances of winning the league, and he believes he’s spotted a trend that proves the Gunners will come out on top this season.

Adams is seemingly quite superstitious, and he noted that Arsenal have a tendency to have title droughts that last exactly 18 years.

Indeed, Adams noted that the gaps between the 1953, 1971 and 1989 title wins were all 18 years, and he says that Arsenal are due a win in 2023.

Of course, the gap between 2004 and 2023 is actually 19 years, but Adams has put that down to the fact that lockdown didn’t count as a proper year in his eyes.

Adams’ sequence

The ex-Arsenal captain shared why he thinks his team are going to win the league.

“I’m very excited. It used to be the 18 year gap all the time didn’t it? 1953, 1971, 1989, but it’s 19 years with this one from 2004, so it’s overdue. But I am putting lockdown down as nicking a year, so there is a sequence here, so it’s got to be ours, it’s going to be ours. 2004 wasn’t it all the way to 2023, but with the lockdown that’s 18 years,” Adams said.

Something to hold on to

This is, of course, just a superstition and the gap between each league win won’t actually affect performances on the pitch.

However, sport is all about buying into these random tidbits of information, and this is certainly something for Arsenal supporters to hold onto as we enter the second-half of the season.

If Arsenal do win the league, Gunners fans will certainly be hoping that they don’t have to wait until 2041 for their next title, but if Adams’ theory proves true, that may be the case.
