Garth Crooks has suggested on BBC Sport that Arsenal should not have sold Emiliano Martinez in the summer of 2020.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, made the comments about Martinez following his performance for Aston Villa against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

Crooks has included the 28-year-old Argentine goalkeeper in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper played well in Villa’s 1-0 win against Wolves away from home at the Molineux Stadium in the Premier League this past Saturday afternoon.

Crooks wrote about Martinez on BBC Sport: “The save from Daniel Podence with Emiliano Martinez at full stretch was impressive but it was the instinctive stop from Leander Dendoncker that made me once again question whether Arsenal were wise to let this goalkeeper leave.

“Martinez looked impressive when he came in for the injured Bernd Leno prior to leaving the capital. However since his arrival at Villa Park the Argentine keeper has been outstanding and a valuable addition to a young team going places.”

Flourishing away from Arsenal

Martinez played well for Arsenal in the final weeks of last season in the absence of Bernd Leno, who was injured at the time.

The Argentine has maintained that form since he moved to Villa in the summer of 2020 and has now established himself as the first choice between the posts for the Villans.

The Villans narrowly avoided the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of last season, but Dean Smith’s side are doing well at the moment and could well finish in the top 10.
