Jeff Stelling has claimed that it would be a ‘heck of an achievement’ if Leeds stayed up this season given their injury problems, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (12/02/22 at 2:55 pm).

But former Scotland striker, Kris Boyd, aimed a jibe at the Yorkshire club by claiming that people thought they were ‘going for Europe’ this term.

Leeds are hovering above the Premier League’s relegation zone and they have been for large parts of the campaign.

It doesn’t help matters when Marcelo Bielsa has hardly had Patrick Bamford at his disposal, as well as Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper now missing for a number of weeks.

That was put into account by Sky presenter, Stelling, but that’s something that wasn’t seemingly accepted by Boyd.

“There is still no Kalvin Phillips, there still is no Liam Cooper and there is still no Patrick Bamford,” said Stelling.

“Survival for Leeds this season, in truth, it would be a heck of an achievement, wouldn’t it?! Given their injury issues. Don’t smile at me like that, Kris Boyd!”

Boyd responded: “You were telling me they were going for Europe” And then he added in a sarcastic fashion, “they have been magnificent.”

It doesn’t seem as though Phillips, Bamford or Cooper will be returning any time soon for the Whites.

What makes matters worse for the Yorkshire club is that Stuart Dallas joined them in the treatment room after their weekend defeat to Everton.

There is a gap between Bielsa’s side and those fighting it out at the bottom, but a few more results going against them, then they will be dragged back into it.

The biggest game of the season for Leeds awaits them on Sunday when they face-off against Manchester United.

They did lock horns last term, but that was without any fans, now Elland Road will be packed to the rafters waiting to pounce on their old enemy.
