Speaking to Liverpool’s official club website, Virgil van Dijk has been discussing Darwin Nunez after his arrival in the summer.
The Uruguayan joined in a transfer that could end up being a club-record deal from Benfica in the summer, and it’s fair to say he had a slow start to life at Anfield.
He received a red card in his second league game, while he also struggled to find the net in his first few weeks following his return from suspension.
However, over the past month or so, Nunez has really come into his own, and van Dijk has claimed that more goals are coming in the near future.
Van Dijk praises Nunez
The Dutch defender spoke highly of his teammate.
“He has all the qualities for a modern-day striker – that is the reason why we bought him,” van Dijk said.
“He is learning how we want to play, he is learning what we expect from him. He plays a little bit on the left but also has a free role to come into the middle.
“It takes time. It is a new team, new environment, new country, new language so it is absolutely normal for him to take a little bit more time [to settle in] but there is no doubt the qualities are there and the goals will follow.
“It’s obviously frustrating when you have a price tag like that and the goals are not flowing but we never doubted his quality and I think he’s done very well.”

Van Dijk may be absolutely right about Nunez, more goals will be coming.
The South American is constantly getting into the right positions using his remarkable pace and strength and if he can just calm down a little bit and hold his composure a bit more, he will be deadly in front of goal.
Nunez clearly has a lot of the attributes you would want from an elite attacker and it may just be a matter of time before he ascends close to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.
