Darren Bent has backed Newcastle United to sign Mauro Icardi in January and ‘go rogue’ in their signings, as he told Sky Sports.

With Newcastle now in the hands of the richest owners in world football, it has opened up the talk of who the club could now sign.

So many names have been thrown about, so many managers are now being linked to that hotseat, even though Steve Bruce is still in charge.

Only a couple of weeks ago, it was doom and gloom for the Toon Army faithful and now they can finally dream that the club can move forward.

And Bent suggested that PSG’s £45 million hitman (Sky Sports) could be a player they could lure to the North East.

“They might have to go rogue in terms of their signings,” said Bent. “They might have to get a couple of guys who aren’t so much dedicated on the football, maybe are a little money-orientated, but you know are top players.

“Someone like Coutinho, who we know has all the ability in the world. Maybe has fallen hard at times during the past few seasons.

“Icardi at PSG, he looks like he is surplus to requirements. That will bring the fans in.

“Plus, those guys have a point to prove as well. I think that level of player is where Newcastle should maybe looking.”

Given Newcastle’s current situation, they will struggle to lure those big name players to their club.

But that won’t stop the club from trying and it won’t stop them from still splashing the cash.

At this moment in time, the structure isn’t in place for Newcastle to surge forward.

And given that they are in the Premier League’s relegation zone, it’s pretty clear what they need to focus on.

So, whilst the first big statement from the new owners won’t be a new signing, it will probably be a big-name manager.
