Jamie Carragher expressed his surprise during Sky Sports’ live coverage of Everton’s win against Arsenal on Saturday after seeing Jonjoe Kenny playing on the left-wing.

Albeit for a brief period, in stoppage-time, Carlo Ancelotti brought on the Everton defender to try and get his team over the line with the game at 2-1.

One of his changes was bringing on the more defensive-minded Kenny onto the pitch, and rather than going in as a right-back, he played further up the field.

When a ball was played over the top on the left-wing, Carragher was surprised to see Kenny running forward with the ball and he issued this response.

“Has Jonjoe Kenny come on at left-wing?” questioned a surprised and laughing Carragher.

“Go on lad! He’s a right-back. If they get the three points they won’t care.”

Martin Tyler added: “It looks like he has. How many right-backs have they got on now? They have two right-backs on and four centre-halves.”

It has been a year since Everton appointed Carlo Ancelotti and the Italian has made some turnaround on Merseyside.

In truth, it shouldn’t be a surprise given his trophy-laden career, as they have gone from being a bottom half side when he took over to a team that is now challenging for Europe, at the very least.

No player has transformed more than Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has turned into one of the most threatening forwards in the league with his brutal one-touch physical play in the final third.
